In June, Bill spoke at the 'Farewell symposium' for Bert Sakmann at the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research. Bert, reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, will be moving with his wife Christiane to Munich, where he will continue working at an MPI there.
I had opportunities to walk around the beautiful old city, where we had lived during our sabbaticals in 1993-94.

A second stroll on my last day, a Saturday, when the Neuenheim Market was on, where we used to shop.

One evening, several of us had dinner at the Sakmann's home. Guests included Amiram Grinvald (Haifa), Dale Purves (Durham), Hans Brenner (Basel), Keiji Imoto (Okazaki), and Tomo Takahashi (Tokyo). Caspar Sakmann, a graduate student in Physics, was also home. Click here for pictures.
