Bill went off on a seminar junket to four institutions, and mixed in some fun as well. He visited New Haven, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and met Joan at Oberlin.
1. In New Haven, he spoke at Yale Medical School and visited Emmy and her friends. Pictured with Emmy are (L to R) top row: Melissa and Leora; middle row: Julia; bottom row: Heidi and Naomi, all seniors in Saybrook College. Heidi loaned Emmy her car, and she and Bill drove out to branford to see where the family will be staying for Emmy's graduation.
2. In Chicago, Bill spoke at the University of Illinois Medical School and visited the house in LaGrange where he grew up, and the Corral, the youth organization in which he had been active in high school (Class of '61). The Corral, which was started by students when Bill's sister Barbara was a student in the late 40's, thrived through the 60's, declined in the 70's and was closed for most of the 80's. It is making a comeback now. He also had a brief glimpse of the sun one evening.
3. In Pittsburgh, he spoke at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. On Monday, he went to the Carnegie Museum to see the fossils that Professor Douglas had discovered in Colorado and Utah (and which led to the creation of Dinosaur National Monument). Alas, the Museum is closed on Mondays! However, the guards took pity, and Matt Labishak (pictured) gave Bill a private tour of the Dinosaur Hall. Bill also visited the original Pitt log house, with the Cathedral of Learning in the background.
Later that day, Bill drove out to Murrysville to visit with Glenn and Marian, and to snap a few pictures, including some old time ones from the many pictures that adorn their walls and shelves.
4. Last stop was Oberlin, where Joan and Bill both spoke, and Joan visited some of the old haunts from her college days (including Dascomb Hall, where she lived during her freshman year). She spoke with students, met with faculty, and was courted by administrators who have targeted her as a potential 'major donor'.
