Mt. Yale 1998

John Boak organized and led this year's assault on Mt. Yale. Twenty-five purists (no bottled oxygen) reached the summit (14,192') in time for lunch. The weather was perfect, and the views from the top would have been breathtaking had any remained to take. Several enthusiasts, including Summer Fellow Melissa Garcia, hiked by the light of the full moon, watched both sunrise and moonset from the summit, and welcomed the rest of us some six hours later.
  • Bob Lesher led a second hike to a secluded lake near timberline for more sensible people not inclined to bag fourteeners. Altogether the CYA placed more than thirty people on the mountain!
  • Champion hiker Canyon Boak, age 7 captured his first fourteener and earned a new Lego set. Is Canyon the youngest person ever to summit Mt. Yale?
  • Stones dutifully carried to the summit closed the gap between Mt. Yale and Mt. Harvard. It is estimated that at this rate the two will be equal in altitude in about 800 years.
