Bill went to Portland for a 3 month sabbatical with Wolf Almers at the Vollum Institute at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). His apartment looked east over the Wilamette River to Oregon's famous . Click here for 21 pictures of Mt.Hood, taken from his apartment.

OHSU is up on a hill, so you can see Mt. Hood clearly from there, too. The Vollum institute was built with a donation from the founder of Tektronix.

Joan came for a visit and we went to see Mt. St. Helens...

... and then drove west to the ocean.



We stopped at Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark and party spent a winter sabbatical 195 years ago.

The famous Oregon coast did not disappoint,
with relentless surf and the first signs of spring.

In April, Joan and Bill visited the Columbia gorge, the only place where the Olympic Range is breached by a river. The catastrophic flood that dug the gorge left tributary rivers high above, producing a series of beautiful waterfalls.
