31. 1893 Isabella quarter
The Columbian Exposition quarter commemorative coin, commonly referred to as the Isabella quarter, was minted to commemorate the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition (held, a year late due to construction delays) to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Columbus in 1492. The coin honors Queen Isabella of Spain who sponsored Columbus' travels, which started the colonization of America by Europeans. Feminist Susan B. Anthony was responsible for the creation of the "Board of Lady Managers," which coordinated women's activities and exhibits at the fair, and the creation of this coin.

The obverse depicts the crowned bust of Isabella of Spain, with the 1893 date to the right of the portrait. The reverse shows a kneeling woman with a distaff in her left hand and a spindle in her right hand, symbolizing women's industry.

The Isabella Quarter and the Columbian half dollar were the first US commemorative coins issued. The Isabella Quarter was also the first coin to show a portrait of a real women (as opposed, for example, to the abstract depiction of 'Liberty' as an anonymous woman). Moreover, it was the only US coin to feature a woman on both sides from its issue in1893 until 2009, when the Sacagawea dollar was issued.

In addition, the Isabella Quarter was, and remains, unique in two aspects.
  • It is the only US commemorative quarter dollar ever issued.
  • It is the only US coin to show a crowned head.
