The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son who died at age 17. The Foundation offers fellowships to further the development of artists and scholars by assisting those selected to engage in creation in any of the arts or to do research in any field of knowledge under the freest possible conditions the irrespective of race, color, or creed. The 2000 Committee of Selection, drawing on recommendations from panels and juries involving hundreds of distinguished artists, scholars, and scientists, has chosen 182 fellows from among 2,928 applicants for awards totaling $6,345,000. The Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of unusually impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment.
